Logic - Is this statement vacuously true?

Suppose lim x_n doesn't exist and yet lim x_n=1 is a true statement. Then by the student's reasoning, the statement lim x_n=2 is equally true, hence since things equal to the same thing are equal, it follows that 1=2 for a contradiction. Thus lim x_n=1 is false.
